When Mr. Destructo was an infant, I acquired a Halloween countdown house. Every year, the Halloween Fairy puts a little treat behind the numbered doors every day until the 31st. Mr. Destructo has been looking forward to October for quite a while. Last week, he inquired yet again:
Mr. D: Is it October yet?
Me: It'll be October tomorrow!
Mr. D: Yay!!!!! That means the Halloween Fairy will come . . . or maybe just you. (Looking at me with his devious grin.)
Me: You don't think the Halloween Fairy is real?
Mr. D: Well, D and A said at school that there's no Santa Claus.
Me: I think maybe D and A are too naughty so Santa doesn't go to their houses. Their parents probably tell them there's no Santa and buy them presents so they won't feel bad.
Mr. D: Yeah, A is pretty naughty. I bet D is too lazy to write his letter to Santa.
Me: That's true, you do need to write the letter so Santa knows what to bring.
Mr. D: (Quietly eats his breakfast for a while.) Mom, how does the Halloween Fairy open the doors?
Me: What doors?
Mr. D: The doors to the Halloween house.
Me: Oh, those doors are so small, she can open them easily.
Mr. D: But the Halloween Fairy is really small, too.
Me: How small is the Halloween Fairy?
Mr. D: Like this. (Whereupon he presses his fingers together tightly indicating that the Halloween Fairy is some sort of microscopic creature.)
Sometimes the treat that the Halloween Fairy brings is not tiny. Apparently, the Halloween Fairy comes with thousands of other microscopic fairies to heft these treats into the Halloween House. I think Mr. D is probably pretty close to the truth about the Halloween Fairy. Yesterday the Halloween Fairy brought him a pair of socks decorated with a goofy purple spider and glittery webs. He commented that perhaps the Halloween Fairy got them at Target.
